Before the image:
- Della goes to buy food for tomorrows Christmas dinner.
- Carefully she is counting and putting aside cent by cent.
- At the end she only had left one dollar and eighty-seven cents.
- At her apartment in her room, she fall in bed and cry because she couldn't afford with the money left a present for her husband Jim.
- Della finishes crying, cleans the marks on her face and goes to window.
During the image:
- She turned from the window and stood the glass.
- Pulling down her beautiful brown hair and let it fall to its complete length, she stopped for a moment while a tear comes out from her eye reaching to a final decision.
- Quickly she puts her hair up again, puts her old brown coat and hat, and goes out to the street.
- She reaches her destination and stop in front of the sign saying "Mrs. Sofronie. Hair Articles of all Kinds."
- Going up to the second floor (of the store) she founds Mrs. Sofronie, and ask "Will you buy my hair?"
After the image:
- Della gets twenty dollars for her hair and goes to the street to find the perfect gift for her Jim.
- From shop to shop, she finally finds the perfect gift, a gold chain for the watch of of Jim.
- She hurries to get home and fixes her hair. Then she wait for Jim to arrive.
- Jim arrives home and he is in shocked to see Della without her long beautiful hair.
- Both sit down together and explain to each other how they both traded what was
most valuable to them so they could buy something valuable for the other.
